He noted its defensive abilities and created a stone fortress on the rock which withstands the sands of time to this day. You will be able to explore the ancient stone ruins and the place where the Sacred Tooth Relic of Buddha was ensconced during the Yapahuwa era.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAfter you will get to Sasseruwa, where the Ras Vehera Statue is. This lesser-known statue is almost as tall as the Aukana Buddha at 36 m tall, though it remains incomplete. However, the style of the statue is completely different from the Aukana Buddha. Little is known about who created it and why it was abandoned halfway through archaeologists have confirmed that it is at least seven centuries old. You will be able to see remains of the image house that the statue originally stood within, and view the ruins of the monastic complex and cave temples around the statue.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAukana Buddha Statue in Asia Mudra or the “posture of blessing” is carved out of a rock boulder. The statue is carved in the round connected to the back to the rock boulder. The delicate and skillful carving of the Buddha’s robe humanizes and chastely reveals the underlying form of his body, while the face’s impassive expression projects an aura of spiritual supremacy. It is said that the degree of alignment of the statue is such that raindrops on the nose would drop straight down to small depression carved between the toes. Aukana Buddha Statue is a masterpiece of a colossal Buddha Statue by an unknown sculptor the serene expression of the statue, the gracefully carved robe with neat pleats brings in delicateness that could hardly be molded into a rock. You will get there by 10:30 am. Yapahuwa was the capital of \u003ca href=\"\/pages\/sri-lanka\"\u003eSri Lanka \u003c\/a\u003eright after \u003ca href=\"\/pages\/dambadeniya\"\u003eDambadeniya\u003c\/a\u003e when the Dravidians invaded. The fortress was built on a giant rock in the style of the \u003ca href=\"\/pages\/sigiriya-rock-fortress\"\u003eSigiriya rock fortress\u003c\/a\u003e. However, the architecture of this fortress is completely different from \u003ca href=\"\/pages\/sigiriya\"\u003eSigiriya\u003c\/a\u003e with wide staircases, beautiful stone sculptures, and highly detailed carvings on pillars. The fortress was later used as a monastery by Buddhist monks. On your visit, you will be able to climb to the fortress and view the ruins of the stupa on the summit of the rock. The stupa has some notable statues and imagery from the Kandyan era that you can peruse. The drive to your final destination, Panduwasnuwara, will take up to an hour and a half. The ancient city was one of the first kingdoms of Sri Lanka, having been the capital during the 5th century BC. The site was used much later in the 12th century as well, resulting in a mix of ruins from various periods. The ruins are spread over an area of almost 12 hectares. Some of the most notable sights are the recently restored monument that was the two-storied former \u003ca href=\"\/pages\/temple-of-the-tooth-relic-kandy\"\u003eTemple of the Tooth\u003c\/a\u003e, ruins of the royal palace, and the artificial reservoir Panda Wewa that is considered one of the earliest irrigation systems ever made by man. You will also be visiting the museum of Panduwasnuwara, which has many archeological finds from excavations in the area. He noted its defensive abilities and created a stone fortress on the rock; which withstands the sands of time to this day. You will be able explore the ancient stone ruins and the place where the Sacred Tooth Relic of Buddha was ensconced during the Yapahuwa era. You will be leaving for Sasseruwa at approximately 1100 hrs.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eAt 1200 hrs you will get to Sasseruwa, where the Ras Vehera Statue is. This lesser known statue is almost as tall as the Aukana Buddha at 36 m tall, though it remains incomplete. However the style of the statue is completely different from the Aukana Buddha. Little is known about who created it and why it was abandoned halfway; though archaeologists have confirmed that it is at least seven centuries old. You will be able to see remains of the image house that the statue originally stood within; and view the ruins of the monastic complex and cave temples around the statue. You will finish your tour of the statue by approximately 1245 hrs and will be retiring for lunch at one of the nearby restaurants. After an enjoyable meal (at your own expense) you will restart your tour at approximately 1500 hrs.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eYou will get to your final destination, the Aukana Buddha Statue, by 1540 hrs. This statue gets its fame from the perfection used during sculpting it from the rock. While you’re there, you will be able to visit the Aukana Greta Royal Temple and view the ancient rock inscriptions on its premises. The ends join the foot of the high steep-sided rocky granite outcrop. The outer fortification, an earthen rampart that extends to about a mile is about 20 feet in height. Over the rampart are the ruins of a brick wall that was erected to protect the interiors. Around the rampart was a moat.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe drive to your final destination, Panduwasnuwara, will take up to an hour and a half. The ancient city was one of the first kingdoms of Sri Lanka, having been the capital during the 5th century BC. The site was used much later in the 12th century as well, resulting in a mix of ruins from various periods. The ruins are spread over an area of almost 12 hectares. Some of the most notable sights are the recently restored monument that was the two-storied former Temple of the Tooth, ruins of the royal palace, and the artificial reservoir Panda Wewa that is considered one of the earliest irrigation systems ever made by man. You will also be visiting the museum of Panduwasnuwara, which has many archeological finds from excavations in the area.
