Horagolla Walawwa
Horagolla Walawwa, located in Atthanagalla near Nittambuwa, is one of Sri Lanka’s most historically significant ancestral homes. This stately mansion stands as the seat of the Bandaranaike family, a political dynasty that shaped much of the nation’s modern history. Surrounded by lush greenery and serene village landscapes, the walawwa exudes both colonial charm and traditional Sri Lankan architectural elegance.
The estate is best known as the home of two prime ministers—Solomon West Ridgeway Dias (S.W.R.D.) Bandaranaike and his daughter, Sirimavo Bandaranaike, the world’s first female prime minister. Its quiet corridors and spacious verandas are filled with echoes of political discussions, national decisions, and the private stories of one of the island’s most influential families. Nearby lies the Horagolla Memorial, a beautifully landscaped public monument dedicated to S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike, drawing visitors from across the country.
Today, Horagolla Walawwa remains a symbol of power, heritage, and cultural pride. Though not fully open as a public museum, the surrounding grounds and memorial park offer a glimpse into Sri Lanka’s political legacy, making it a meaningful stop for history enthusiasts and travelers exploring the island’s central-western region.
