The Sri Lankan Gypsy people, known as Ahikuntaka among the Sinhalese and Kuravar among the Tamil and Muslim populations, are a unique ethnic group in Sri Lanka with a rich heritage that traces back to the Telugu regions of the former Madras Presidency in India. This group migrated to Sri Lanka centuries ago, maintaining a distinct cultural identity through their nomadic lifestyle.

Traditionally, the Sri Lankan Gypsies are known for their itinerant way of life, traveling across the island in caravans and living in temporary settlements. Their livelihoods have traditionally centered around trade and performing arts, particularly snake charming, monkey performances, palm reading, and other forms of street entertainment. These activities not only provide a source of income but also play a significant role in the cultural exchanges between the Gypsies and the communities they visit.

Culturally, the Gypsy community is known for its distinct music and dance, which are integral to their celebrations and daily life. They also possess unique linguistic traits, primarily using a dialect that blends elements from Telugu and the local languages of Sinhala and Tamil, reflecting their diverse historical influences and migratory patterns.

Despite their rich cultural traditions, the Sri Lankan Gypsy people face numerous challenges, including social marginalization, economic hardships, and limited access to education and healthcare services. As a result, many in the community continue to struggle for recognition and integration into the broader societal framework of Sri Lanka. In recent years, there have been efforts by various organizations and some governmental bodies to improve their conditions, aiming to preserve their cultural heritage while also enhancing their social and economic standing.
