Bodhisatvas are beings who have attained enlightenment but choose to postpone their own salvation in order to assist all living beings. The Bodhisatva is not a representation of an actual historical figure like the Buddha; rather, they are an ideal figure. They aid devotees out of compassion for those who worship them. On the other hand, they are not connected with historical individuals, hagiographies, or the act of martyrdom in the same way that saints are. There are several bodhisatvas to be found. Maithree is the Buddha of the next era, and it is believed that he will one day be born to spread the message of enlightenment.
